At the Elsinore framing & gallery, we field a lot of calls about the cost of picture framing. It is a difficult question to answer in most cases because most callers simply don’t know the right questions to ask. Typically, if someone is calling for a framing quote, they really want a “cookie-cutter” answer, which is almost impossible unless the frame shop has a standardized bundle- type program available. We can usually arrive at a “ballpark” answer but only after guiding the customer through a lengthy list of questions about their project. Most often, these well-intentioned customers calling for quotes:
- Are first-time custom framers or have little experience with framing.
- Don’t have an idea of how their piece should be framed (materials, techniques, etc.).
- Are not prepared with the specific information about the piece (size, media, etc).
- Are uniformed about the average prices for custom framing vs. ready-made solutions.
We know that for most people, custom framing is not something they think about every day. We try to give them the best, most efficient answers we can based on our conversations with them about their needs. So how do we answer the question of what framing costs? In most cases, we can give an approximate cost based on the finished size of the piece (including matting, mounting and frame).
Generally speaking, we don’t have standardized prices on custom framing although we do have a couple of bundle programs in our in-stock selections that we can use as reference pricing. We also have ready-mades and metal frames available for cost-conscious clients. We make every effort to find framing solutions that are cost-effective without sacrificing quality.
So, what’s the answer to the main question? Well, to put it simply, it simply depends on what you choose for your project. I can tell you that our in-stock frames start as low as $6 per foot and go up to $20 per foot with our Super Value discounts. Our metal and Select programs start at $26 – $48 for a finished 8 x 10 frame and our wood ready-mades start at $12.95 for a 5 x7 size (frame only). Other than those minimums, custom framing prices can vary dramatically.
The better prepared the customer is when they call, the more accurate we can be with our estimate. Having been in the business for over 30 years, we have a good idea of approximate costs for most types of projects. We always tell the client to bring in the project for a more accurate quote and design consultation. We always offer free estimates, but we can certainly provide better service when working face to face with the customer.
Remember, the best answers always result from the best questions. When calling for an estimate, be prepared with as much information as possible. And of course, our best advice is always to visit us in person with your project at Elsinore Framing-444 Ferry St. SE in downtown Salem.
